Sara Alert™ Live Panel Session, August 27, 2020, 10:30AM – 12:00PM EDT
TITLE: Got Symptoms? Meet Sara Alert – A 21st Century Tale of Rapid Collaboration and Partnership in the Face of a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION: Public health agencies had to respond swiftly to the novel coronavirus that emerged in 2019 (COVID-19) to help contain the virus. Quickly identifying new cases and monitoring exposed individuals was critical. This work is labor intensive and available tools are often limited.
In response, MITRE, a not-for-profit organization that operates federally funded research and development centers (FFRDC), partnered with public health organizations to develop Sara Alert™, a standards-based, open source tool. This tool allows public health officials to enroll individuals exposed to, or infected, with COVID-19 or any infectious disease. Sara Alert™ enables individuals to enter their symptoms daily, providing public health departments with real-time insights. Successful development was possible because key stakeholders across public health organizations were consulted early.
Sara Alert™ serves as a force multiplier that supports disease containment and allows resources to be directed where they are most needed. It is available in the public domain, free of charge, to public health agencies. As an open source tool, Sara Alert™ is available for public and private use and is easily integrated into other tools.
This live session will present the steps taken to develop a viable, open-source tool in collaboration with federal, state, territorial, local and tribal public health organizations. It will address the importance of early collaboration and partnership, and why it is a model for the future. The session will also explore lessons learned as well as opportunities through partnership to build Sara Alert™ into an enduring, nationally available resource to meet public health needs in response to emerging pandemics – today and in the future.

Raising the Reach of Public Health
July 7-9, 2020 | Virtual Conference
At NACCHO, we value the safety and well-being of our members and conference attendees, which is why we’ve converted NACCHO 360: Raising the Reach of Public Health into a fully virtual experience. This innovative virtual convening aims to break down silos by connecting our traditional NACCHO Annual conference with PHIITS: Public Health Informatics, Information Technology, and Surveillance, a reimagined Public Health Informatics (PHI) Conference that goes beyond informatics to also explore local health department information technology infrastructure and public health surveillance.
